Applying Management

Looking back a couple months ago I worked on a catering event with a close friend of mine. The event was for a friend of ours whose father owns his own consulting company. He wanted us to put on appetizers, entrees, and dessert all with wine parings. And to make the event more unique he wanted us to do an interactive type of thing in which we would work with the food in front the guests and show them how we prepare the different items. And then for the dessert we taught the guests how to make crepes with a choice of their toppings.

This event took the both of us a lot planning and communication. Since it was only the two of us we had to mange each other to make the most of our time and to make sure we were being as efficient as possible. It worked well between the both of us because my friend set up the menu with our friend’s father who was hosting the party, and then my friend and I tweaked everything a bit. I did my extern for a caterer so I really know what you can and cannot do, which was an advantage for prepping in advance. We really did a good job at organizing all the tasks, prioritizing, and then working together to get jobs done efficiently. It was great to sort of manage each other.

To see something, communicate it, and then be able to do it was a great experience for the both of us. I was proud that I could just use my prior knowledge that I learned during extern to our advantage and see what I learned applied to an application outside of just my externship job. I had developed management skills from being managed by other people on extern and learning what I should do, and what I shouldn’t do. So it was a great learning experience for me, and not to mention the event went perfectly.
