The discernment of a chef is extremely unique. When you work in a kitchen, your perception of nonverbal communication keenly improves. It begins with your own cooking... being able to smell, see, and hear food cooking over heat. There are signs that are shown by the pan, the oven, and the fryer. This is your own evolution of senses.
Then you have your coworkers. Once you get used to their moves, clothing, and style, you can see who the person is without even turning your head to see their face or body. You can hear the sound of their shoes, see the color of their apron, and feel how close they are to you. It's a sixth sense for cooks and especially when you work on the line.
