Communication is a key factor to any type of relationship. It lets you know how a person is truly feeling and how a person is reacting to certain situations. Communication in the kitchen is especially important, orders being called out, co-workers asking for you to watch something real fast, different directions or recipes, and so much more. Over externship, my chef was a little Brazilian man, he was the fastest talking and "walking" chef I have ever worked for, half of the time he would give me directions on what in the day we have to complete and he'd still be talking to me when he is walking out of the main kitchen and down the hall, just not noticing what he
was doing and then I had to catch up with him to hear the last bit I had missed; and the other half of the time he would gather the staff in the kitchen and stay in the middle and made sure everyone knew what they had to accomplish that day or shift. I guess it just depended on what mood he was in... The ability to communicate properly with your co-workers and managers makes the kitchen run more smoothly and more cohesively during every day.
