Where can one begin with communication. It is such a basic idea that it is almost hard to go into detail about the topic. Humans communicate through speech, through body language, through text and literature, and as technology grows there are many, many more forms of ways to communicate with each other. As some know in my last blog I communicated that I was incredibly bored and wrote a short story. This blog was very close to becoming the third chapter of Reggie's story where he goes to work at a McDonalds in Russia (where the heck do these ideas come from?). Instead I'll actually write something slightly more relevant and more an experience.
How do we as people communicate we're in trouble? How do we communicate if something is wrong, if something is bothering us, if something is making us uncomfortable? Some store it up inside and put on a facade to make others believe that they are fine and dandy. Others talk to shrinks, or their family, or their friends. Some vent on the internet, some lock themselves away and do not communicate at all.
In the restaurant industry stress is an frequently occurring factor in a cooks life. No cook, no matter how much of a bad ass they are, is going to have zero stressful days. Something goes wrong and poof how do you deal with it? You can do the things above (I myself am guilty of doing several of the above reactions), or you can find ways around it. I may have loved my externship for the most part but I'll be damned if it was perfect. I had a couple breakdowns...in which I was asked to leave the line because I simply couldn't function. On other days I tried to use humor (my humor which as with most people's styles of humor and being funny will not appeal to everyone so one has to entertain themselves) to entertain myself and others, I would sing to myself or with my kitchen manager, or I would simply talk to my co-workers about what I was thinking about. These things are necessary for peace of mind for a cook in my opinion. Being able to be comfortable in the high stress environment of the kitchen can be hard but you need to find a way to be that way. So yeah I hope I've communicated my thoughts to you.
